Manitoba Pileated Woodpeckers – Dryocopus pileatus

The largest woodpecker in North America. The birds are immediately recognizable by their spectacular bright red crest. A mating pair of Pileated Woodpeckers defends their territory all year long, even if one of them dies.

We have a mating pair of Pileated Woodpeckers that visit our feeders every morning and afternoon in southern Manitoba. They’re very cool birds. Their shrill call ‘Yuk Yuk Yuk Yuk Yuk’ is unmistakeable.
